If you don’t know already, I’ve got a little bit of a weakness for horses.

A couple years ago, I made friends with a few graffiti artists. Sometimes I  photographed them while they were out painting, doing my best to figure out ways in which i could take portraits of them while still respecting their anonymity. This was a favorite of mine from a sunny afternoon in the trainyard.

in Sigulda, Latvia, in an old abandoned Soviet veterinary hospital for large animals. The family who owns the property now converted another building into their home and stripped this one of it’s valuable materials to sell.

Gatis stands on top of one of the crumbling fort structures left to ruins on the coast of Liepaja, Latvia, and lights a cigarette. Pieces of these concrete structures fall into the surf like bones of a giant skeleton. Dana and Nastia stand by the car and pull out a bottle of vodka that they take turns passing around as we huddle in a group and watch the sun set.

Mike in front of Rusty Butts (RIP), a camp built by graffiti writers, train lovers, forest lovers (etc) which was eventually found by the DNR and torn down. Complete with fire pit, shooting alley with targets, tree lookout post, and lounge chairs- it was pretty impressive.

The guardhouse was originally part of a former Navy hospital complex. From 1905, off and on, the Guardhouse served as a short time disciplinary punishment place including the 20 years of the first Latvian Republic and during the Soviet occupational periods. The bloodiest time for the Guardhouse is said to be the Nazi occupation during World War II. The mass graveyard nearby is estimated to hold the remains of about 90 victims. Other victims, mostly the civilians, were killed by a shot in the back of the head and buried in random places in the nearby pine growth. This image is from the inside of one of the cells where prisoners were said to have scratched their names, messages, and calendars in the walls with their fingernails or teeth knocked from their mouths. The Guardhouse is now open for interactive tours where you can sign up to experience a simulation of what it felt like to be a prisoner; or “escape from the USSR”, where you can get a tour of the nearby network of tunnels. The Guardhouse is also available for bachelor and bachelorette parties.
